We drove up to Luray, Virginia and even just the drive was incredible. We drove the majority of the way along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. The trees were just starting to change colors and the mountains were beautiful! We finally arrived at our cabin that we rented for the night through Shenandoah River Outfitters(http://www.shenandoahriver.com/). We stayed at the "Line" Cabin which was fully equipped with a kitchen area, futon, bedroom, and hot tub on the porch. We checked into our cabin and dropped our things off then headed to the Luray Caverns(10 minutes away). Outside the caverns we first went to the Garden Maze(but buy your tickets in the cavern lobby, if you do both you get a discount!).
The Garden Maze was a lot of fun! Not only did you have to find your way out, but there were also four clues you had to find before you got out. After the maze we went into the caverns.
The Caverns were beautiful! If you can go during the week I recommend it, we were there on a Monday and it felt like we were the only ones there. There is an audio tour that is great to go at your own pace but the atmosphere and beauty are nearly overwhelming. We walked hand in hand through the caves in awe of the huge formations.
After the caverns we headed home to the cabin, cooked a light meal, and spent the rest of the night enjoying each others company. We cuddled in the hot tub, out under the stars that shone all so brightly in the rural sky, listened to the Shenandoah River gurgle along 100 yards from the porch. We sat inside and curled up in some blankets on the futon and watched a movie and of course spent some quality time in the bedroom. The next morning we woke and walked down to the river shore, ate breakfast, then packed up.
On the way home we stopped at one of the trails off of Skyline Dr. and hiked to a breathtaking waterfall, the perfect end to a perfect trip! |
